US-based data center business EdgeMode has announced plans to secure the use of a BESS near its base in Marviken, southern Sweden, to attract clients.

The Floridian company on Tuesday announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Swedish energy infrastructure business Marviken ONE AB. The arrangement will see EdgeMode pay Marviken for the use of its BESS and an associated EMS for an initial three years.

EdgeMode did not specify the scale of the BESS in question.

The US business believes the use of energy storage will free up more grid capacity for its Marviken data center and will incorporate the cost of using the facility into its fees for energy users at the site.

EdgeMode stated it is “building a robust pipeline of enterprise customers seeking scalable, energy-efficient, and resilient operations in the region.”

Chief Executive Charlie Faulkner told ESS News, “Our target customers are enterprise data center tenants – particularly those running AI [artificial intelligence] and HPC [high-performance computing] workloads – who require scalable, energy-efficient, and resilient infrastructure. The integration of BESS and EMS into the site is designed to ensure greater power stability, operational flexibility, and sustainability for these tenants.”

Under the terms of the agreement, EdgeMode said the funding of any associated projects would be determined on a case by case basis.
